The main reason behind this is because in ancient times it was the tradition of Romans to give gifts; they used to give gifts to celebrate the saturnalia holiday. It was also Romans who were very first introduced to Valentine’s Day as well. Like this, the 1st of every New Year started to become a holiday. Then the time came around 336 BC, when the Christians declared 25th December as the birthday of Jesus, and in order to celebrate they started giving gifts.
Christmas has become the festival of Christians which they celebrate very decoratively. They give gifts to their family, friends, relatives, parents, spouses, and almost everyone they know. One more important reason they give gifts on occasion of Christmas is that, because they believe that Jesus got hanged for them, in order to save the Christians life. They also believe that Jesus has taken all the sins of every Christians with him, so now they have no sin on them, no matter what they do. That’s also the reason why Christians call Jesus their God. So in order to celebrate this event with high decorations, happiness, joys, they give each others presents. This symbolizes their happiness, joys, and as a remembrance to Christ, who gave his life for them. Without gifts the event loses its meaning. So gifts have great importance in this.
